Malcolm Godfrey stars in acclaimed BBC2 reality show Grandad's Back In Business - don't miss it on 17 September 2007 at 9pm

Malcolm Godfrey stars in Grandads Back In Business on BBC2, Monday 17 September 2007
Malcolm Godfrey from Time For Greenwich stars in Grandads Back In Business on BBC2, Monday 17 September 2007.

Does Malcolm Godfrey have what it takes to land a job in a top restaurant?

With more than 30 years in catering, including a long stint as a Royal Navy chef, Malcolm Godfrey thought it would be easy to get a new job. He was wrong.

'I wanted to work with other people again because I missed the company,' admits Malcolm, 52. 'But I soon learnt I was either too qualified or didn't have the right background. Plus, people don't like to employ you if you're older than them because they're scared you might know more.'

So, when Malcolm got the chance to take part in BBC2's acclaimed reality show Grandad's Back In Business, he jumped at it.

In the programme, Malcolm competes against 20 year old James Keyede for a full-time job as a junior chef at London restaurant Pied a Terre, which has two Michelin stars. It seats about 40 people and has 35 full-time staff.

When Malcolm began his month-long apprenticeship under Pied a Terre's chef and co-owner, 37-year-old Shane Osborne, he had no idea it would involve 16-hour days where the chefs are expected to make everything from bread to after-dinner petit fours.

'I was getting up at 5.30 in the morning and not getting home until after midnight,' says Malcolm, who lives in Dartford, Kent, with his wife and four daughters. 'It was like being on The Apprentice. It was exhausting, but also exhilarating.'

Watch the show on BBC2 on Monday 17 September at 9pm (or in Scotland, 24 September). It's going to be an enjoyable hour with a nail-biting climax!

Take a look at the BBC's own write up of Malcolm and James's struggle to impress head chef Shane. (Opens in new window)

Malcolm Godfrey Brings the Ghosts of Greenwich to 'Life'!

In April and May Malcolm Godfrey worked with 'Fright Nights' to help in their delivery of Ghost Experience evenings at Devonport House in Greenwich, by setting the background on local ghostly inhabitants to those participating in the evening.

Drawing upon the stories in his books on Walking Ghostly Greenwich, Malcolm informed, entertained and amused during a jaunt around nocturnal Greenwich.

Malcolm and Fright Nights will join forces again on 24 November this year when he will relate his tales during an evening in the Skittle Alley of the Old Royal Naval College. For more details visit www.frightnights.co.uk (opens in new window).

Aaron Steele on the podium at Brands Hatch during the Formula Palmer Audi Autumn trophy in November 2006.

Aaron Steele, the seventeen year old racing driver backed by Time For Greenwich, clinched second place overall in the Formula Palmer Audi Autumn trophy last weekend at Brands Hatch.

In an exceptional performance, Aaron achieved podium places for all three of Sunday's races. His remarkable statistics include fastest in practice and qualifying, leading the first race by nearly 10 seconds, breaking the lap record and completing a run of seven races without finishing lower than third place.

Aaron is delighted with his results, particularly as many of his competitors are much more experienced and include reigning champions. He has proved he is as quick as anyone else, and is determined to achieve his first win next season.

The team are seeking sponsors for Aaron to compete in the 2007 Formula Palmer Audi Championship. We at Time For Greenwich will be there and we would strongly encourage you to consider the opportunities available to promote your own business. A number of partnership packages and sponsorship deals are available. If you would like to know more about the advantages to your business of getting involved in motorsport please call us on 07739 462156 (mobile).
